How to Transition Back to School the Montessori Way

Although it has not been a typical back-to-school time, we couldn’t be more grateful to have our Montessori family together again. Today, we are more committed than ever to making sure that our school remains the SAFE, JOYFUL and NURTURING place we all love to share.

Safety First: Back to School COVID-19 Procedures

The safety of your child and of the LPC team is our number one priority. We have worked tirelessly to implement the enhanced safety procedures that follow the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) guidelines.

The new safety procedures include temperature checks for all students and personnel entering the school grounds, and social distancing rules that apply both inside the classrooms and throughout the campus. Facial masks are required for all employees and students, except those who are under three years of age or cannot wear masks for medical reasons.

Once on campus, children change their shoes upon arrival to their classrooms (or their shoes get disenfected) and are frequently instructed to wash their hands. New touchless soap and towel dispensers have been installed throughout the school to make this easier for the students.

School areas are also regularly sanitized, using the latest CDC and DCF guidelines. New personnel have been hired, whose job is exclusively to disinfect door knobs and other frequently-touched objects in each classroom and throughout the common areas.

Please watch this video for more information about the student drop-off / pick-up and other safety procedures that we have implemented this school year to keep our Montessori family safe.

Back to School: Wean Your Child Off Of Their Summer Routines

As we are starting the new school year, please help your child succeed by setting regular times for bed and waking, including on weekends. Avoid late nights and make sure your child gets proper rest each night.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that infants (4-12 months old) should sleep 12-16 hours per day, children 1-2 years of age 11-14 hours, children 3-5 years of age should sleep 10-13 hours, and children 6-12 years of age 9-12 hours per 24 hours on a regular basis to promote optimal health.

Before sending your child to school, make sure they have a healthy breakfast that includes some protein and fruit. Avoid foods high in refined sugar that can lead to hyperactivity, difficulty to concentrate and other issues.

Learn And Understand The Montessori Philosophy

One of the key goals of the Montessori method is to foster independence in a student. Therefore, it’s vital to encourage your child to master life skills every day.

“Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed,” Dr. Maria Montessori said. From Montessori lessons to simple chores, allow your child to take responsibility for their own progress, while letting them know that you are there to help them along the way. With this freedom comes the opportunity for children to gain more enjoyment from learning.

Since the Montessori method doesn’t place emphasis on rewards and verbal praise is given in moderation, part of your role as parent will be to help teach your child to find pleasure in pride from completing tasks. It’s also key to emphasize the value of mistakes to your little one, as it’s part of the learning process.

Welcome New Students!

If it’s your child’s first time attending a Montessori school, it’s important for you to understand how this unique school educates.

Unlike traditional schools, Montessori focuses on individualized learning experiences, making room for your child’s passions and interests. Montessori classes are made up of students of different ages, giving younger students the chance to learn from older ones, who in turn get the educational benefit of mentoring.
