Supporting Cultural Diversity In The Montessori Classroom

At La Prima Casa we take great pride in supporting cultural diversity and peace education in the Montessori classroom.

When Dr. Maria Montessori opened her first school, one of her goals was to foster peace and international understanding. The best way to do that was through education, she thoughtfully concluded.

“This is education, understood as a help to life; an education from birth, which feeds a peaceful revolution and unites all in a common aim, attracting them to a single centre.” Dr. Montessori said.

Celebrating International Day at La Prima Casa Montessori

Montessori schools make it a priority to support cultural diversity, expose students to other cultures and teach to appreciate them.

This spring, with Dr. Montessori’s mission in mind, La Prima Casa Montessori held its International Day, where students went on a continent-hopping world adventure, all without leaving the Miami campus.

The students learned about the cultures, traditions and languages of several countries, including Mexico, Australia, France, Kenya and Egypt. They sang local songs, tasted local foods and got a chance to experience what it was like to live in a different part of the world.

Experiencing World Cultures and Traditions at La Prima Casa

Montessori education helps expand the world our children live in. This begins with geography and cultural lessons, where Montessori students learn to identify continents and countries. They also learn about customs, clothing, language, food, and ways of life of other nations.

One engaging way Montessori teachers help foster better cultural understanding is by encouraging parents and students to share some of their own traditions with the rest of the class.

Students enjoy learning about the holidays their classmates celebrate at home, the type of authentic food they make, and the languages they speak.

Striving for Peace

Promoting the understanding of other cultures also supports another concept that is near and dear to Dr. Montessori: Peace.

By learning to appreciate the differences in other people, children are better prepared for peaceful conflict resolution, from playground arguments in early years to corporate boardrooms later in life.

Peaceful conflict resolution is one of the most important life skills taught at Montessori schools, and it’s closely related to the cultural appreciation encouraged by the curriculum.

Dr. Montessori believed that children develop their world view at a young age. Her goal was to promote global understanding and international peace through education. Dr. Montessori wrote, “The child is both the hope and a promise for mankind.”
